Adult Education during Advent

Adult Education during Advent: Transforming book study and forum schedule

This Advent, as we gather around the mystery of Word transforming into flesh, of God becoming a body to dwell among us, we are going to focus our adult education on learning about gender diversity and sexuality. Transgender theologian and author Austen Hartke will be with us for two weeks in a row to lead us into a rich conversation. If you would like to dive deeper into this topic than what our forum schedule allows, pick up a copy of his book, Transforming: The Bible & the Lives of Transgender Christians, which came out earlier this year. The way Austen puts his own story and the experiences of other transgender Christians in conversation with biblical texts is packed with fresh and refreshing insight, wisdom, and imagination. There will be opportunities to discuss more of the book in January. If you’d like to be part of a small group conversation, please get in touch with Pastor Martha.

December 2: Intergenerational Advent fun: making John the Baptist ornaments, introducing devotional practices for Advent, and more

December 9: Basics of LGBTQ+ allyship, with Austen Hartke. This will be a chance for all of us to brush up on terms and concepts related to sexuality and gender as we also talk about how to be truly inclusive and expansive in our justice-seeking and in our welcome of all people. An important workshop as we continue to live into our RIC (Reconciling in Christ) identity!

December 16: Sexuality and gender diversity in Scripture, with Austen Hartke.

December 23: Discussing selections from Transforming: The Bible & the Lives of Transgender Christians

December 30: Social time, perhaps with carol singing!
